Haha -
Well when we first put this poll up we were just experimenting. Trouble is we only have space for 10 slots and I wanted to give a variety. Sometimes we get so hung up on Electric Rock players we forget about some of the really wonderful guitarists who have amazing chops. Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery are perfect examples. Wes was a MONSTER player and how many votes did he get? Who would you list as your 10 top? Dan |

OK OK OK - you guys are killing me!
Read the above post... Sounds like we need to have a "Vote Off" to determine the top 10 guitarists who deserve to be on the list. What do you say we start with the 100 top guitarists, and have multiple polls until we wind up with the top 10? Dan |

hey lets not forget U2's "The Edge" he has shown that you dont have to be a blues shredder to be a great lead guitarist and was a breath of fresh air to what music had become in the 80's.

No particular order.
--Angus Young --Jimmy Page --Joe Satriani --Hank Marvin --Brian Robertson (I think that's his name...guitarist from Lizzy?) --Joe Perry --Slash --Tony Iommi --Kirk Hammett --(I thought I should put in a more recent guitarist) Corey Beaulieu (Trivium) |

all you guys are seriously missing it.......JOHN PETRUCCI......Dream theater, the fastest, most versatile and inventive guitarist alive today. i mean sure Page deserves more credit because he was a pioneer, but i bet he can't play flight of the bublebee!!!!

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label Society) Dimebag Darrel (Pantera, Damageplan) Kirk Hammett (Metallica) Mark Morton (Lamb of God) Jon Donais (Shadows Fall) Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) Jesper Strombland (In Flames) Adam Jones (Tool) Allen Collins (the ORIGINAL Lynyrd Skynyrd...R.I.P.) These guys could chop circles around ANY of the old school boys. Not that i don't appreciate Page or Hendrix, but man is it overdone. |

I think many players group "most skilled" and "best" player together without realising that it shouldn't be that way. There are MANY awsome guitarist out there and in pure mechanics there are thousands of players that could be on that top ten list.
Now, "best" in my book is a different story. True talent isn't just playing well, but it's being able to compose so well that it moves everyone who listens to it. A really good player can also adapt this talent into multiple styles. To me, this is phil keaggy. The guy has more albums than I've bought guitar strings and he's proved his prowess through many different styles and he's also shown he can really shred when he wants. This is what I mean when I say "best" player ever. |

Maybe we need a top 100 as I know of a few that have not been mentioned yet which I feel are awesome axe slingers. How about;
-Robert Johnson -Chet Atkins -Ry Cooder -Rik Emmett -Brian May Man, there are so many out there. These only mention guitar players that were very popular. There are also loads of them out there that have never seen the limelight. |

I have to agree with Gollum on that one. Keaggy is a phenomenally gifted musician with a body of work extending over 35 years. Within that criteria, I would also name Vince Gill and Prince as contenders. Both are also great singers, songwriters and multi instrumentalists. But for those of you unfamiliar with Prince, check out the solo he did on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" during the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame show a few years back. Not only did he smoke Clapton (who is one of my favorites), who cut the original track, but a host of other reknowned rock guitarists. Talk about cutting heads on international TV!
As for Vince Gill, Eric Clapton himself invited Gill to perform at the Crossroads Festival. Gill was the only country guitarist chosen by Eric, who only invited "those guitarists whose work I admire". |

Some of the main guitarists I've discovered since my naive days on this forum a few months ago are James Hetfield, king of picking precision, Dave Mustaine, his second-in-command, and Tim Sult of Clutch, who writes weird, bluesy riffs. He amazes me.

I think Hendrix is a really great guitar player, but I also think he's overrated when people talk about him being THE greatest guitar players. I personally think his playing was sloppy...J

Seems back in the 80's he was a shredder. He and "some guy" named Bruce Kulick had a band called Blackjack. I wonder why it didn't work out?
