Using Effects Effectively: Part 6

Choosing a Distortion Pedal

By: Gary Allen

In the last edition we covered compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates. Although these effects do not make drastic changes in the sound of the guitar I hope everyone grasped the importance of these effects. Now lets talk about some of the fun stuff. The effects that make drastic changes to your sound. Let’s start with Overdrive and Distortion.

Effects : PreSonus Acousti-Q: Part I
Posted by Dan on 2004/5/23 1:26:00 --

Acoustic guitars have always carried with them a mystique of sorts. The image of the lonely singer-songwriter playing in small intimate gatherings or the cowboy on the range. Those that can play them well are revered by even the most hard-core electic rockers. Even Zakk-Wylde has released an acoustic CD! In the modern era of music production - acoustic guitars are often recorded along with or even preferentially to electric guitars. The success of MTV's "unplugged" series has shown that people love the intimacy and emotion that can be expressed by the acoustic guitar.

There are many pedal effects that changed the sound of rock and roll. Phasers, flangers, and wah-wah pedals added a new dimension to funk, rock, blues, and R&B guitar sounds.

Using Effects Effectively: Part 5

Understanding Compression

By: Gary Allen

In the last few articles we talked about reverb, delay, chorus, and flange. The echo or time delayed effects so to speak. This month we will discuss what compressors, limiters, expanders and gates do and how they are used in music.

Compressors: What does a compressor do? Compression is probably the most misused effect that is used by guitarists. This misuse is probably a result of the fact that many players do not understand what compression is or what it does. When a new guitar player gets a hold of a new effects unit they expect that it is going to alter the sound of the guitar in a very noticeable way. A compressor is not this kind of effect. Think of it as a ghost in the shadow of the effects chain. If you weren’t looking very hard for it you would not even notice that it was there.

Using Effects Effectively: Part 4

Flange

By: Gary Allen

So far in this series we have been focusing on the time delay effects. In this edition we will look at one more time delayed effect called “Flange”. Next month we will move on to “Compression” and “Distortion”.

Effects : Aphex Xciter Pedals
Posted by Gary on 2004/4/30 11:01:00 --

Have you ever found that your gear just wasn’t sounding the way you wanted it. You had the right tone dialed in and all your effect settings were as close as you could get them to perfect, yet something was missing. No matter how you change the settings on your amp or the parameters on your effects the sweet spot just isn’t as sweet as you would like it to be. What is the matter you wonder? The answer to that question is simple. You are missing one of the essential effect units in your effect chain. This unit is the Aural Exciter by Aphex Systems. www.aphex.com The people at Aphex Systems were kind enough to send me their new stomp box style Xciters for acoustic and electric guitar to review for you.

The Unsung Hero

Thank Your Bass Player

By: Gary Allen and Rob Miller

Okay, listen up all you musicians. I want you to walk over to your bass player the next time you see him/her and thank them for the job they do for the band. Let them know how much you appreciate the way they hold down the low end and bring all the instruments together. In my opinion the bass player performs one of the most important jobs in a band, yet for some reason they get the least recognition.

Posted by Dan on 2004/4/22 10:00:00 --

No matter how sophisticated our technology, a melody is still a series of single notes. Nobody ever sings chords or tracks. They sing individual notes.

While creating music, some of us might hear melodic and/or rhythmic ideas in our heads, then high-hurdle the sofa en route to the keyboard to play and record them right away. Others may not hear anything specific, but will feel that lightning urge to create and hope they'll find some magic hidden between the black and white keys. But no matter where we find our music, or where it finds us, a melody is still a series of single notes.

Guitar Health Part 3

Upper Body Strength

By: Gary Allen

Upper Body Strength - Upper body strength is especially important for those players who have their instrument strapped to their body in some way. (The guy who plays the grand piano does not qualify here.) If you have never played for an extended period of time with an instrument strapped on, you would be surprised how heavy it will feel at the end of a show. I received an email from a bass player by the name of Rob Miller who brought up a couple of points: the benefits of a wider strap and proper lifting technique.

Using Effects Effectively: Part 3

Chorus Effects

By: Gary Allen

In the last edition of “Using Effects Effectively” we discussed “Delay”. Delay is the foundation on which many other effects are built. If you have not read Part 2 of this series, I encourage you to do so. It will help you understand the principles of the next two effects we are going to cover. In this edition we will cover “Chorus”, and in two weeks we will discuss “Flange”.
