oh hey thanks for the feedback! i also noticed that the mix could of been much better. the drums need panning especially the toms and overheads. and in my opinion the track is a little on the dark side :) i mean bass heavy. and for the solo track. i to noticed that the last part really sucks! . im planning to rerecord it and work on getting a better tone from what i have. and of course learn how to breath when i speak! thanks again! ill get a new mix posted soon (maybe a week or 2)

Rokit5 -

If that was your very first song you are definitely on the right track. As for things to consider in the future... (I'm not going to say "to do different" because music is subjective).

1. Be attentive to how things lay in the mix both sonically and spacially. I only got to listen to it twice (and on cheap speakers) but everything seemed to be panned right down the center. You can widen the sound by panning the rhythm guiter to one side, the bass to the other and the lead in the middle (or whatever works for you). Same for the drums if tracked separately but I assume you sampled the drums on one track. Sonically you don't want to share the same frequency bands among instruments when possible. I.e., don't play notes in the same octave on the bass and guitar at the same time (unless you're intentionally trying to harmonize them) because the mix can get "muddy".

2. Watch your levels in the mix. To my ear the rhythm guitar track kind of got lost in your mix. While the melody line should be the most prominent, I think you should be able to hear each instrument clearly.

3. Silence is golden. When writing/playing you don't have to be playing constantly. Think of a musical rest as a comma or period when writing or like taking a breath when talking. Sometimes it's good to take a break to let the run you just played sink in, build tension or allow the listener to "catch up" (depending on the mood and intention). You did this well for the most part but there were also a few places where it sounded like you needed to let things breathe a bit.

4. Vary the notes/dynamics and mix up note durations. I.e., playing 16 measures of 1/4 notes can get tedious to listen to. Again you did do a good job with this overall but there where a couple spots that seemed monotonous.

5. Enjoy the performance. This is probably the biggest thing for me in this track and it is more than understandable for a first song. If I close my eyes and try to get a mental picture of you playing this track I see someone a little tense like they're performing at their first recital, nervous that they may screw up. I do the exact same thing when I try recording myself so that's why I mention it. When you relax it lets everything else flow better.

Please take this all with a grain of salt and only as suggestions, not criticism. Only you know how you intended the song to sound. You may have nailed it, you may not have. Either way, music is all about self expression and the fact that you took the leap of faith to record this and share it is a huge step in your musical journey.

Good job and I wish you the best of luck. Keep on rockin'!

Mike
